Chemotherapy is a boon for the cancer patients as it is a gateway to run away from the clutches of the deadly disease called cancer. The treatment involves a lot of complex drugs to work upon the cancer cells of your body and destroy them. The body becomes weak and fragile during the treatment. Thus, you need to have an exclusive diet during chemotherapy to sustain yourself. There are numerous side effects of chemo and only good nutrition, proper intake of calcium, vitamins and proteins can help you.

Various Side effects of Chemotherapy

The various side effects of chemotherapy include hair loss, weight loss, and change in your sensing ability and loss of immunity. The taste buds stops functioning temporarily and thus you will not be able to differentiate between any kinds of food you eat. This leads to a nauseating feeling all the time and you reduce food intake. Thus maintaining an appropriate diet during chemotherapy is quite difficult but you have to ensure that you eat properly. Bitter food items and those with strong tastes are advised as you will feel better having such kind of food items. You can try to have Miracle fruit which is a tropical fruit and quite expensive. It has immense taste altering capabilities. A lemon can even taste sweet if you have it after rubbing miracle fruit on your taste buds.

Diet during chemotherapy should be well planned and properly managed as per the condition of the patient. You must follow the diet not just during the period of treatment but also after the chemo is over. Food items rich in iron, vitamins, low starch and calcium is very necessary to keep the body system compatible with the treatment. A lot of strong medicines work to fight with the cancer cells. The body needs strength to withstand the effects of the drugs.

Protein rich food items are also very important to sustain the affect of drugs. But, meat should be avoided at any cost during chemotherapy. You can go for powdered or fluid protein supplements. Water is very essential part of diet during chemotherapy. Another side effect of chemotherapy is that leads to production of a lot of toxins inside the body at an excessive rate. Cancer slows down the process of flushing out the regular toxins and the excessive ones create more problems. Water should be taken at an interval of 15-20 minutes to hydrate body and detoxify.

Things That are a Must in Your Diet during Chemotherapy

Let us have a look at the things to include in the diet during chemotherapy.

  • Vegetarian diet should be preferred and plant rich foods.
  • Bitter vegetables and fruits as it will help to eat during the chemotherapy when taste buds stop functioning properly.
  • Food with strong taste should be included in your diet during chemotherapy.
  • Food grains that have low starch content can be taken.
  • Spices that add taste and smell along with ginger should be used to prepare the food.
  • Seltzer, club soda and sparkling water can be added to the diet.
  • Protein rich liquid or powered food items in place of meat.

  • Water intake after every ten minutes.

 

Things to Avoid During chemotherapy

There are certain things that amplify the side effects of chemotherapy and harm the immune system of the body. These things should be eliminated from the diet during chemotherapy. If you are a regular drinker, here is a piece of bad news for you. You must avoid alcohol as much as possible. Cut down the drinking rate to once in a week. Beer or wine at 5 ounces per week is allowable. Consumption of sugar rich food should be prevented. The taste buds are not functioning anyway and so even if you have fetish for sweet dishes, you have to wait till the affect of chemo is over.

 

Diet during chemotherapy should be based on plants and thus meat should not be a part of your die anymore. Oily food or too much fried items must also be avoided as it can have adverse effects on your body. Ice-cream should not be consumed regularly and drinks that are ice-cold should be avoided. The right kind of diet during chemotherapy and even after the chemo treatment is over will help the body to recover fast from so many strong drugs. If you wish to lead a comfortable life after combating the menace called cancer, you must comprehend the situation and follow a strict diet.
